Step-by-Step: Application of Gel Polish
A BRIEF ABOUT GEL POLISH
Gel Polish, UV polish, Shellac, or Gellack, all refer to the same product—a hybrid between classic nail polish and a thin UV-cured gel. Gel Polish can retain its color and shine for 2-3 weeks, and it’s extremely easy to change colors or create unique designs and effects. It is usually applied in 2-3 thin layers, with a Hard Base Coat underneath and a Top Coat No Wipe on top.
STEP-BY-STEP GUIDE TO APPLYING GEL POLISH
1) Prepare Gel Polish Colors
Gel Polish colors can settle over time, so they need to be mixed before use. Avoid shaking the bottle as it may cause air bubbles. Instead, flip the bottle upside down and roll it between your hands.
2) Perform a proper prep
See the correct method in the step-by-step guide here.
3) Apply Base Coat and cure for 60 seconds
Rub the Base Coat into the nail by pressing the brush tip onto the nail plate with a pushing motion. Only a thin layer should cover the nail. Seal the free edge as well. After curing, there will be a sticky layer which should not be removed.
4) Apply the first coat of Gel Polish and cure for 60 seconds
Apply thin layers to avoid wrinkling or uneven color. If the polish flows into the cuticles, the layer is too thick.
- Dip the brush into the bottle, wiping off excess polish. Scoop up a small amount of Gel Polish from the side of the bottle's neck.
- Place the brush in the middle of the nail and push the polish toward the cuticle without touching it. Pull the polish down the nail.
- Seal the free edge.
- Lift the brush and repeat from the middle of the nail toward the sides.
- Cure all five nails for 60 seconds in a UV lamp.
If you struggle to apply polish close to the cuticle without touching the skin, use a thin Nail Art brush to push the polish closer.
5) Apply a second coat of Gel Polish and cure for 60 seconds
Repeat the steps as in the first coat.
6) Apply Top Coat and cure for 60 seconds
Apply Top Coat using the same method as the Gel Polish. It’s "No Wipe," meaning there is no sticky layer after curing, so no need to clean it with Cleaner+.
7) Finish with cuticle oil
Wash your hands and apply cuticle oil around the cuticle and under the nail. Read more about daily nail care in our blog.
