Gel Polish Peeling Off? 7 Causes – and How to Fix Them

There is almost always a concrete reason when gel polish peels off after a few days — and it is rarely the polish itself. Find your cause in the list below, and fix it once and for all.

The 7 causes (and the fix for each)

1. Oil or dust on the nail at application. The most common cause. Fix: Buff, brush away the dust, and degrease with cleaner as the very last step before base.
2. Cuticle residue on the nail plate. Gel does not bond to skin. Fix: Push back your cuticles and remove the thin membrane on the nail before applying.
3. Unsealed edges. Peeling starts at the free edge. Fix: Bring every layer all the way over the edge of the nail.
4. Layers that are too thick. Thick gel does not cure through and stays soft inside. Fix: Two thin layers instead of one thick one.
5. Under-curing. A weak or mismatched lamp = gel that looks hard but is not. Fix: Follow the curing time, and use a lamp tested with your system — see the UV lamp guide.
6. Water and chemicals right after application. The gel needs the first 24 hours. Fix: Postpone long baths and cleaning, and wear gloves for the dishes.
7. Naturally thin, flexible nails. The nail flexes more than the gel can follow. Fix: Apply a flexible rubber base under the colour — it moves with the nail.
