Why Rebalancing Beats Removal Every Time
Why Rebalancing Is the Key to Healthy, Long-Lasting Nails
At The Gel Collection, we prioritize nail health. To protect your natural nails, we recommend rebalancing your gel nails every three weeks instead of removing and reapplying the product entirely. This method minimizes wear and tear on your natural nails while ensuring your enhancements remain strong and beautiful.
Here’s a guide to rebalancing your nails effectively.
What Is Rebalancing?
Rebalancing is a maintenance process designed to restore the shape, structure, and balance of your nail enhancements as your natural nails grow. Over time, the gap between the cuticle and the gel product widens, and the structural points (like the apex) move toward the tip of the nail. This shift can lead to imbalances, making rebalancing an essential step to maintain durability and aesthetics.
Why Choose Rebalancing Over Removal?
- Protects the natural nail: Avoids repeated filing that comes with full removal.
- Saves time: Rebalancing is quicker than starting from scratch.
- Preserves nail health: Maintains strong, healthy nails without unnecessary stress.
Step-by-Step: How to Rebalance Your Nails
1. Reduce the Thickness of the Old Product
- To create a smooth base for the new product, begin by removing about 50% of the existing gel.
- Use an electric nail file or a manual file to gently reduce the thickness.
- Be careful not to over-file, as this could compromise the natural nail underneath.
Why it’s important: Skipping this step can result in nails that are too thick once the new layer is applied.
2. Remove All Lifted Product
- If any areas of the gel have lifted from the natural nail plate, they must be removed to prevent further lifting.
- Use a fine file or an electric file with a narrow bit to gently file along the edge of the lifted area.
- Continue until the lifted product detaches, leaving only gel securely adhered to the nail.
Pro tip: An electric file offers precision and saves time, especially for intricate lifting areas.
3. Perform an Effective Prep
Preparation is key to ensuring the new product adheres properly. Focus on the regrowth area:
- Cleanse the nails thoroughly.
- Lightly buff the regrowth area to remove any shine.
- Apply a primer or dehydrator to improve adhesion.
4. Apply the New Product
Now it’s time to rebuild the structure and restore balance:
- Apply your preferred gel to the regrowth area.
- Focus on recreating the apex to maintain strength and a natural curve.
- Cure the gel as per product instructions and finish with filing and buffing for a smooth result.
Recommended products: Rebalancing works well with rubber base, liquid builder gel, builder gel, or polygel. Note that gel polish is not designed for rebalancing and requires full removal before reapplication. To avoid this, consider using a rubber base layer under gel polish.
Why Regular Rebalancing Is Better for Your Nails
Contrary to common myths, nails don’t “need a break” from enhancements. Nails are made of keratin (dead cells) and don’t require oxygen. In fact, regular rebalancing is healthier than repeated removal and reapplication because it:
- Reduces the risk of thinning and damage.
- Maintains nail strength and integrity.
- Saves time while ensuring consistent, beautiful results.
