Ridges in Nails: What They Mean – and What You Can Do

Ridges in the nails are one of the most googled nail questions — and the answer depends entirely on which way the ridges run.

Vertical ridges (from cuticle to tip)

Vertical ridges are by far the most common — and almost always harmless. They typically come with age (like wrinkles in the skin) or are hereditary, and they are amplified by dryness. They need no treatment, but if they bother you cosmetically, they can be smoothed out.

Horizontal ridges (from side to side)

Horizontal grooves are rarer and appear when the nail's growth has been disturbed — for example after a knock to the nail, harsh cuticle treatment, an illness with fever or a stressful period. The nail "logs" the event, and the groove grows out over a few months. If you get many horizontal grooves on several nails with no obvious explanation, it is worth a doctor's check.

How to get a smooth surface

1. Buff lightly — polishes down the fine ridges. Never hard: the nail plate needs to keep its thickness.
2. Cuticle oil daily — flexible nails show ridges far less.
3. Rubber base levels: a self-levelling rubber base fills the ridges and gives a mirror-smooth surface under the colour — the fastest cosmetic fix.
