How to Remove Gel Polish at Home – Gently and Easily
Gel polish needs to be removed properly — otherwise you tear the top layers of the nail plate off with it. The good news: with the acetone wrap method it takes 15-20 minutes, and your nails stay healthy. Here is the gentle method, step by step.
What you need
- Pure acetone (regular nail polish remover is too weak for gel polish)
- Cotton pads + foil or reusable removal clips
- A coarse nail file (100/180 grit) and a buffer
- A wooden or metal cuticle pusher
- Cuticle oil for aftercare
You will find everything in our removal range.
Step by step
- File the surface matte. Gently file away the top coat so the acetone can penetrate. Do not file down to the nail — just break the seal.
- Apply the acetone wrap. Soak a cotton pad in acetone, place it on the nail, and wrap the fingertip in foil — or use clips. Wait 10-15 minutes.
- Push the gel off. The gel polish bubbles up and can now be pushed off gently with the cuticle pusher. If some sticks: NEW wrap for 5 minutes — never scrape hard.
- Buff lightly and wash your hands. Remove the last residue with the buffer.
- Finish with cuticle oil. Acetone dries out the nail — massage cuticle oil into nail and cuticles. Ideally daily for the next week.
The 3 mistakes that ruin your nails
- Picking or peeling the gel polish off. The top layer of the nail comes with it — leaving weeks of weak, peeling nails.
- Filing all the gel away. Without experience you quickly hit the nail plate. Only file the surface matte, and let the acetone do the work.
- Skipping the cuticle oil. Dry nails break — aftercare is half the result.
Frequently asked questions
Can I remove gel polish without acetone?
Not gently. Without acetone the gel has to be filed off completely, which takes a practised hand (or an e-file and experience). For most people the acetone wrap is the safest method.
How long does it take to remove gel polish?
15-20 minutes for all ten nails: 10-15 minutes of soaking plus pushing off and aftercare.
Does removing gel polish damage your nails?
Not when you use the wrap method and let the acetone loosen the gel. Damage happens when gel polish is picked or peeled off.
Can builder gel be removed the same way?
Builder gel is harder and typically needs more filing first. The method is the same, but allow a longer soak.
