"Are shellac and gel polish the same thing?" Almost — and yet not. In short: Shellac is a brand name (from the manufacturer CND), while gel polish is the whole category of nail polish that cures under a UV/LED lamp. Here are the differences that actually matter for your choice.

What should you choose at home?

If you want to do your own nails, gel polish is the obvious choice: the systems are built for home use with lamp, base and top in one, the wear time is longer, and you can go from thin, natural looks to strengthening builder gel. If you miss the shellac experience from the salon, a thin layer of gel polish in a nude tone comes closest.
