What is builder gel?
Builder gel is a thick, self-levelling gel that cures under a UV/LED lamp. Where gel polish is a thin layer of colour, builder gel builds a strong, supporting layer — perfect if your thin nails keep breaking, or if you want length and a beautiful curve (apex) on the nail.
How to use builder gel — step by step
- Prep: Push back your cuticles, buff the surface matte, and degrease with cleaner.
- Thin foundation: Apply a thin layer of builder gel as a base, and cure it.
- Build the layer: Place a bead of gel in the middle of the nail and guide it towards the edges with the brush. Turn your finger upside down for a moment — the gel levels itself into a nice curve.
- Cure for your system's time (typically 60 seconds).
- Shape and finish: File the shape, brush off the dust, and finish with colour and/or top coat.
Infills: How to avoid starting over
After 3-4 weeks the nail has grown out and there is a visible edge by the cuticle. You do NOT need to remove everything: lightly file down the surface and the growth zone (about 2/3 of the layer), degrease, and apply fresh builder gel over the whole nail. This is called an infill (refill) — it takes half the time and is kinder to the nail, because you skip the acetone removal. Only remove everything when the gel has lifted, or you want a break.
